Traffic Cops in Gurgaon to go Hi-Tech With Project 3rd Eye


Project 3rd Eye, India’s first traffic violation tracking system will be coming to Gurgaon first, followed by other cities depending on the success of the project. Traffic cops will now carry a GPS-enabled mobile phone fitted with a special software called Tselina, so whenever there is a traffic violation, the cop has to simply snap a photo which is then automatically uploaded on a server along with the offender's licence plate and co-ordinates of the location. Now, this would work well for parking violations and such but I’m not sure if this would work for, let’s say, jumping a red light.

The first leg of the project involves equipping 300 traffic cops with a Nokia E5. Now, we’ve reviewed the E5 and the camera isn’t one of its strong suits. It’s a fixed focus camera to begin with and also it takes a while to for the image to be processed once you hit the shutter button so if the offender is in motion, it's going to be almost impossible to get a clear shot. The trial runs have already begun in June along the National Highway 8 and the east and west traffic zones. Once the photo is uploaded, a challan will be dispatched to the offenders along with the co-ordinates of where the offence was committed. While this is good attempt at making the roads safer, I just don’t see it working. To capture an offence, the constable would have to be ready with the phone at all times which is not practical. Let’s see how well this pans out.

Space exploration and the shuttle: our eyes are still on the final frontier

If I had to pinpoint the event that launched me on a career in science, it was watching those grainy black-and-white images of Neil Armstrong's historic first step on the powdery lunar surface.
Nasa, the American space agency, has come a long way since the Eagle landed in July 1969. It has given us feats of breathtaking bravery; the most remarkable rescue in history, when the crew of Apollo 13 was returned safely to Earth; jaw-dropping insights into every major object in the solar system; and even the first interstellar mission. Two nuclear-powered Voyager probes, launched in 1977, remain on course to reach distances well over 10 billion miles from the Sun within the coming decade.
This week, there has been much agonising over the future of Nasa, prompted by the final flight of the Space Shuttle programme. The mission marks the end of three decades in which the Shuttle never managed to rekindle the excitement of the great Apollo adventure – or, as promised, to make spaceflight cheap and routine. It also saw two catastrophes – the losses of Columbia and Challenger, along with 14 astronauts – that shattered public confidence in Nasa.
Many today believe that the agency has lost its way. It has cancelled its Ares launcher programme – which would have provided the boost to take humans back to the Moon, and on to Mars – and is about to convert its Shuttles into museum pieces without a clear idea of what comes next. After this mission, America will be dependent on its former rival, using Russia's Soyuz and Progress vehicles to supply the International Space Station. Neil Armstrong, along with other astronauts, has expressed his alarm that Nasa has ignored a golden rule of space exploration: always have a back-up plan.
Nasa's budget has fallen victim to wrangling between Congress and the Obama administration. The House just released its appropriations Bill, which gives Nasa funding of $16.8 billion, $1.6 billion below last year's level and $1.9 billion below the president's request. It has also axed the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble's successor, to the consternation of scientists.
As for where Nasa goes next, the president has given only a vague outline, in the form of missions to an asteroid and Mars. From the perspective of any space cadet from 1969, this isn't very impressive. Moments before Armstrong's Apollo 11 booster lifted off from Cape Kennedy, vice-president Spiro Agnew declared that the next goal should be a manned landing on Mars by the end of the century. A presidential committee on post-Apollo objectives – which Agnew happened to head – predicted that America could send astronauts to Mars by the mid-Eighties for not much more than the $24 billion cost of Apollo. No wonder Armstrong has criticised Obama's plans.
Nasa's administrator, Charles Bolden, insists that his agency has a future and has promised to maintain American leadership in space travel for the next half-century. He wants to leave low-Earth-orbit missions to the private sector, so that Nasa can focus on deep space exploration.
In part, this is an acknowledgement of how much has changed since the Cold War spurred Kennedy to declare that he wanted to reach the Moon. Private space ventures have taken off. There is Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, which will use a spaceplane strapped to a mothership to reach the edge of space. Meanwhile, Armadillo Aerospace in Texas is developing vertical takeoff, vertical landing spacecraft.
Then there's SpaceX of Hawthorne, California, led by the internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, which has tested the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon space capsule, which the company hopes to use to run a taxi service to the International Space Station. Boeing is working on a crew capsule of its own, called the CST-100. The Las Vegas company Bigelow Aerospace plans to create orbiting hotels in inflatable space stations. And why stop at missions around our home planet? Musk is even talking to getting to Mars in a decade or two.
The nature of the space race has also changed profoundly since 1969. In all, nine countries have placed payloads in orbit. Citizens of almost 40 countries have now flown into space. Meanwhile, India and China have announced ambitious plans.
There's no doubt the current economic situation is going to hold back space exploration for a while. But I, for one, have no doubt that over the next half-century, space will maintain its ability to grip the human imagination as only the final frontier can. Is the dream over? Far from it. Be prepared for the next giant leap.

By 2014, Bionic Spectacles Will Impart Vision to the Blind

Beginning from 2014, the vision-impaired will have the scientists at the Oxford University, United Kingdom to thank for bringing back the lost hopes of regaining vision. The scientists have readied what they call bionic spectacles that integrate the use of mini-sized cameras and a pocket computer to give the wearer indications about any object in their way, and also to the people walking in their direction.

According to a report in The Hindu, among the several highlighted features of the spectacles, are its inexpensiveness and light weightedness.  Using these glasses, the blind will find it possible to do the basic tasks like finding their way on crowded roads, read bus numbers, among others. The spectacles primarily derive their information from the Light Emitting Diodes that have been fitted into the lenses, which light up, thereby giving the wearer all the necessary details.

Although a fixed price tag for the same has not been added, the researchers state that the price tag would be kept affordable.

NSG Website Suffers Breach

Adding to the string of high-security breaches is the data breach of the official website of India’s foremost, special-trained counter terror and anti-hijack commando force, the NSG (National Security Guards). The officials of the NSG unit, although not completely sure, suspect a hacking attempt most likely to have hit their systems.

According to a report in Hindustan Times' Delhi edition, the website, www.nsg.gov.in, in addition to the official e-mail domains are feared to be compromised. The website, however, is being claimed to be the least affected, and as a safety precaution, the passwords of the official emails of NSG units are being reset. Although, there hasn’t been any confirmation on the miscreants behind the breach, initial probe carried out by the NSG unit have traced the links to outside the country.

Headquartered in Delhi, the NSG unit is presently one of the most elite anti-terror units. The NSG site is being maintained by the technical wing of the NSG force, in association with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). You will recollect that the famous hacking outfit, Anonymous had breached the data of the NIC, too, sometime last month. This was in addition to the hack at the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) website.

Increasing instances of data breach on the official website of various government units pose a serious threat to the flawed claims of security, and has in the process discovered many loopholes.

Hypersonic, Eco Friendly Flights By 2050?


Have your flights made you wish that you reached your destination in less than half the time it says it would? Well, this innovation seems to have been picked out of one such wish. Come 2050, a ‘Hypersonic’ jet called Zehst; an abbreviation for Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation will slice its way through London, and take you to Tokyo in 2.5 hours flat. Just in case you’re wondering, it takes a good 11.5 hours to reach Tokyo from London, at present. The surprise doesn’t end there, the jet claims to go easy on pollution, and can ferry about 50 to 100 passengers.

The Zehst plans are scheduled to be made public today at Le Bourget airshow, near Paris by the European Aerospace leader, EADS. The jet will be powered by normal engines, only it will be run on biofuel made by seaweed, before the rocket engines are turned on. The rocket engines are fuelled by hydrogen and oxygen that owing to their elemental properties (leave behind plain water vapor) help the jet maintain an altitude of 32km.

However promising the concept may seem, the jet wouldn’t be seen around in action before 2050, which is indeed, a long time to wait for. The EADS, in collaboration with Japan can be expected to roll out a prototype of the same by 2020.

NIC Servers and Indian Army Official Website Hacked


We last reported about the hack outfit, Anonymous, hacking into the data of National Informatics Centre (NIC). Today, it has been learned that the official website of the Indian Army has been brought down owing to a successful hack attempt by Anonymous.

In addition to the official site of the Indian Army, Anonymous also managed to bring down the entire server of the NIC. The group addressed a letter to the Indian government citing the hack to be an answer to the rising instances of corruption in the country.

The letter, addressed to the Indian government reads:

We are Anonymous Again.

You Have Underestimated the Power of people.You thought First NIC Hack by Anonymous was Playful act, "THINK AGAIN".

Additionally, the outfit claims to have access to all data stored on the NIC servers, and has threatened to leak all of it. Anonymous has also posted a video press release addressed to the government criticising the corrupt, and laid-back nature of the Indian government, and has stated their hacks as attempts to better the situation in the country, and ensure the success of the Anti-corruption bill. Indian astronaut to walk on Moon in 2025: Kalam

Bangalore: Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam hoped an Indian astronaut would walk on the Moon in 2025 and on Mars by 2035.

"I believe an Indian astronaut will walk on the Moon in 2025 and on Mars by 2035. The Indian space agency should attempt to put an Indian on Moon and Mars between 2025 and 2035," Kalam said at a function here.

Releasing a book titled "All About Rockets", authored by advisor to the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) S.K. Das, Kalam said Indian space scientists should innovate cutting-edge technologies to reduce the cost of access to space to $2,000 per kg from the current $20,000 per kg.

"Low cost access to space is the way forward. The challenge for the Indian space scientists is to reduce the launch cost to $2,000 per kg from $20,000 per kg currently by using nanotechnology and reusable single-engine stage launches," Kalam told ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan and directors of the space agency's various space centres who were present on the occasion.

Recalling his long association with the space agency and his involvement in the failures and successful launches of the first satellite launch vehicle (SLV) and the subsequent polar satellite launch vehicles (PSLVs), Kalam said space was another destination for man's quest for renewable energy.

"One of the spin-offs I foresee from space technology is to innovate a low-cost energy solution. We are already using solar energy to power satellites to orbit around the Earth and run its various payloads (instruments). We need to innovate a solution to transfer the solar-generated energy to earth and store it in the form of power cells or batteries that can be used as renewable energy," Kalam pointed out.

Regretting that India has been a laggard in achieving breakthroughs in rocket launches, building satellites or supercomputers, Kalam said the country should overcome the status of being a "fourth or fifth nation syndrome" to becoming the first country in cracking space technology and ICT (information and communication technology) through innovation and research.

"After every successful launch of a rocket or satellite, India is ranked as the fourth or fifth nation in the world to have achieved success or breakthrough in space technology. It is time for us to overcome the fourth or fifth nation syndrome and be the first among equals if we have to become a superpower. We can do it," Kalam added.
